Q1:What is rasam podi made of?

Ans: Rasam powder generally made from traditional spices like cuminseeds, black pepper, fenugreek seeds, gramdal(chana dal), Corriader seeds red chillies and hing powder. In some special cases dried garlic powder, tomato powder or mint powder added in the rasam podi recipe to enhance the flavours.

In other cases toor dal added to rasam podi makes the rasam a healthy& protein rich dal rasam or pappu rasam or parupu rasam. The addition of chana dal is to give additional flavors and thickens the rasam. Fenugreek seeds or methi seeds gives a unique flavor to the rasam and also healthy.

Q2:What is the difference between rasam powder and sambar powder?

Ans: Rasam powder used in different varities of rasams, gravies made with tamarind and in mostly in tomato soups when people having soar throat or sneezing issues.

Sambar powder is preferably used in gravies made with dal & vegetables and vegetable fries. The ingredients nearly same for both.

Q3:Can I use rasam powder instead of sambar powder?

Ans: Because of many ingredients are same in both the powders, we can use rasam podi as a substitute for sambar powder. In some vegetable fries we can use rasam podi.

Try to get a rasam powder contains same ingredients as in sambar powder, then one same powder for many uses.

Ans: One of the main ingredients in the rasam podi is black pepper, which is good to have when we have sore throat.

The other ingredients like tamarind juice, curry leaves, turmeric powder are also suggested use when we are about to get cold and cough. This powder can be added in the tomato soup while we are suffering with sneezing.

Ans: The daily consumption of rasam improves the digestion. The key ingredients in this is cumin seeds and black pepper,  which help in secretion of enzymes that improves digestion. It also helps in gastric related issues and to protect the gut.

Q11:How to make rasam?

Ans: Prepare juice from soaked tamarind and tomatoes in a litre of water, add salt and curry leaves.

Now fry 4-5 pieces of smashed garlic and 3-4 red chilles in a tablespoon of oil till garlic turns to golden brown color.

Finally add the prepared juice and 20-25gms of rasam powder, mix well and allow it to boil vigorously. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
